Start with Mario Kart World - then set up GameShare, which is the real reason to care
For a Switch 2 owner who wants one game that works with everybody, Mario Kart World is the pick: four players on one console, up to twenty-four online, and no explanation required for anyone who has ever held a controller.
But the genuinely new thing on this console is not a game. It is GameShare, and it changes the arithmetic of playing with friends more than any individual release does. GameShare lets you share a compatible game with friends and family even if they do not own it - so one copy in the room can cover several consoles. If you buy a Switch 2 and never turn it on, you have missed the point of the hardware.
GameShare, accurately
There is a lot of vague writing about this feature, so here is what Nintendo's own GameShare page actually says, checked October 5, 2026.
It streams, rather than downloads. GameShare works by streaming the game from the host system, which is what makes it a way to start playing quickly without waiting for a lengthy download.
Only a Switch 2 can send; a Switch or a Switch 2 can receive. In Nintendo's wording, "Only Nintendo Switch 2 systems can share games", while "any Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch can receive them". So one Switch 2 owner can host for friends still on the original console - which is the single most useful fact about the feature, and the one most often got wrong.
Up to four consoles can take part in a session.
There is no time limit on a session. Everyone can keep playing as long as the session is active, with no additional time restrictions - so a group can work through an entire story-driven co-op game across weekly sittings. This is what separates it from the hour-at-a-time console sharing features people may be used to.
Locally it needs nothing extra; online it needs GameChat.Sharing with nearby systems works in person. To share and play together online you use GameChat, and for that Nintendo states that "Internet, Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account" are required.
The game has to support it. This is the real constraint - you need software that supports the GameShare function, and that is a specific list rather than the whole catalogue. Nintendo names titles including Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Donkey Kong Bananza, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Super Mario Party Jamboree supports GameShare but is listed as not supporting GameChat, so treat that one as a local-sharing title.
Backwards compatibility: most of why the library looks big
Switch 2 plays Switch games, which means the great majority of the best multiplayer titles on this page are not Switch 2 releases at all - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Overcooked! All You Can Eat and Human: Fall Flat all carry over with their local multiplayer intact.
That has a practical consequence worth saying plainly: if you already own a Switch and a stack of its party games, the Switch 2 is an upgrade to how they run and who can join, not a reason to rebuy them. The native Switch 2 releases - Mario Kart World, Kirby Air Riders and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment - are the things you cannot get any other way.
What to check before buying for a group
Local player counts are per-console, as always. Mario Kart World takes four on one Switch 2. Kirby Air Riders takes four on one console and up to sixteen online. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is two on one console in split-screen - and it is a GameShare title, so a second console can join without owning it.
Controllers are still the hidden cost. Four-player local play means four controllers. Our second controller guide covers the Switch 2 Pro Controller and the cheaper third-party options, and what each one gives up.
Online play needs the subscription. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features including GameChat, which is also the route for sharing games with friends who are not in the room.
