Games a whole household can play, and the pad that lets them.

A family gaming gift has a different test from every other gift on this site: it has to work for the least experienced person in the room. A game the twelve-year-old loves and the grandparent cannot hold a controller for is a gift for the twelve-year-old. Everything on this page was chosen for the other outcome - the one where four people of wildly different ages and skill levels are on one couch, and the weakest player is still having fun ten minutes in.

That mostly means Nintendo. The Switch and Switch 2 are the consoles built for a room of people, the first-party games are designed to be picked up in seconds, and the console ships with two controllers in the box. If the household you are buying for has a PlayStation or Xbox instead, the Overcooked, LEGO, Rayman and Minecraft picks below are on those too.

The pick, if you only buy one thing

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Four players on one Switch, no learning curve, and assists that let a small child finish a race without falling off the track. It is the safest gift in gaming and the game most families still play years later. The one risk is that a Switch household already owns it - it is one of the best-selling games ever made - so ask, or check the shelf. If they have it, Nintendo Switch Sports is the next safest: swing a Joy-Con to play tennis or bowling, which a grandparent can do against a six-year-old and lose with dignity.

Before you buy

Three checks for a family gift. The system - a Switch game does not play on a PlayStation, and Kirby Air Riders needs a Switch 2 specifically. The rating - these are whole-room games chosen for the least experienced player, but ratings differ by region, so read the one on the listing if you are buying for someone else's children. And the controller count - a Switch comes with two Joy-Con, so players three and four need extra pads, which is what the gear section below is for.

Kirby Air Riders

SwitchCrossplay: No - Nintendo Switch 2 only

Best for: A room with mixed skill levels - the controls are one stick and one button.

1-4 on one Switch 2, up to 16 online · Racing / arena party

Nintendo's support page confirms the shape: up to four players per mode, and "Air Ride and City Trial modes support split-screen, while Top Ride shows all players on the same screen", with the two-player split settable to vertical or horizontal. Released November 20, 2025. The reason to pick it over Mario Kart World is the skill floor - almost nobody bounces off it - and the reason not to is depth: City Trial is the mode with legs, and a group that wants pure racing will get more nights out of Mario Kart. Switch 2 only.

The gear, in depth

1
8BitDo Pro 2 product photo

8BitDo Pro 2

Controller8BitDoBudget

Best for: The cheapest second pad that works on genuinely everything, including the Switch.

Bluetooth, Hall effect sticks, for Switch, Switch 2, PC Windows, Android, macOS, Steam and Raspberry Pi

A second controller only has to do one job - exist when a friend sits down - and this does it on more machines than any first-party pad. Hall effect sticks are the specification that matters over a long life: they use magnets rather than a wiper contact, which is the part that wears out and causes drift on ordinary controllers.

The catch: The layout is a Super Nintendo-style pad with grips, not an Xbox clone, so the face-button and stick positions feel different to anyone used to a modern console controller. Some Xbox-native PC games also expect Xbox button prompts and will show the wrong glyphs.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller product photo

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller

ControllerNintendoPremium

Best for: Player three and four on a Switch 2, where the console is the four-player machine.

Official Nintendo controller for Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch is the console most likely to have four people on one screen, and this is the pad that gets them there. It is the official option, so there is no compatibility question with first-party games or with the console's own features.

The catch: It is the most expensive controller on this page and it only does one machine. For two-player Switch games the Joy-Con you already own will do the job for free, so buy this for players three and four, not for player two.

The rest of the list, by the kind of household

A family that likes to shout. Overcooked! All You Can Eat. Four cooks, one chaotic kitchen, and a game that a seven-year-old and a parent can play as equals because the skill is communication, not reflexes. On every current system; the edition we link is PS5.

A parent and one kid. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Two-player co-op through all nine films, with the forgiving LEGO rule that nobody really dies and the weaker player can never hold the stronger one back. Long enough to last a year of weekends. Rayman Legends is the four-player version of the same feeling - a beautiful platformer where the group carries anyone who falls behind.

A family game night with a board-game habit. Super Mario Party Jamboree. Four players around one screen rolling dice and playing minigames, with enough randomness that the youngest can win. It is the digital board game a whole family agrees to; our Jamboree vs Superstars comparison explains why this one over the older pack.

A household that just got a Switch 2, with mixed ages. Kirby Air Riders. The controls are one stick and one button, which is the whole reason it is here: it is the racing game for a room where somebody has never held a controller. Four on one console, sixteen online. Switch 2 only - it will not run on the original Switch.

A family spread across different devices. Minecraft. The one game here that runs on everything - consoles, PC, tablets and phones - and lets all of them play in the same world through Bedrock crossplay. A kid on a tablet and a parent on the Xbox can build together, and a household that already has it can still use a second copy for a second device. We link the Switch edition.

The gear: players three and four

A Switch ships with two Joy-Con, which covers two players for free. The gift that unlocks four-player Mario Kart or Mario Party is the third and fourth pad, and this is where families most often stall.

8BitDo Pro 2 is the budget answer: it pairs to the Switch and Switch 2, also works on a PC or a phone, and its sticks use magnets rather than contacts, so it does not develop the drift that wears out ordinary pads. Its shape is a classic Nintendo-style pad with grips, which children tend to find comfortable. Switch 2 Pro Controller is the official answer for a Switch 2 household: the pad with no compatibility questions, at a higher price, and one that Nintendo did not discount in its 2025 holiday sale - so buy it when the occasion is rather than waiting.

A note on age ratings and online play

Most of this page is drawn from our games to play with family guide, and nearly all of it is about people in the same room, where a parent can see the screen. Minecraft and Mario Kart both have online modes; if the children will play online with strangers rather than with family, our kids' online safety guide walks through the console-level controls that limit who they can talk to. We do not print ratings here because they differ by region; the listing shows the one that applies to you.

Shopping in November?

Nintendo's own holiday sale last year discounted a set of older Switch games - Nintendo Switch Sports among them - but not its newest Switch 2 titles or its controllers. The Black Friday and Cyber Monday page lays out which family picks dropped last year and which did not, so you know whether waiting is worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gaming gift for a family?+

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for any household with a Switch - four players on one console, no learning curve, assists for small children, and years of use. If they already own it, Nintendo Switch Sports or Super Mario Party Jamboree are the next safest whole-room picks.

Which family games work on PlayStation or Xbox instead of Switch?+

Overcooked! All You Can Eat, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Rayman Legends and Minecraft are all on PS5 and Xbox as well as Switch. Mario Kart, Switch Sports, Mario Party and Kirby Air Riders are Nintendo-only.

Do I need to buy extra controllers?+

A Switch includes two Joy-Con, so two players are covered. For four-player games like Mario Kart or Mario Party, players three and four need their own pads - the 8BitDo Pro 2 is the budget option and the Switch 2 Pro Controller is the official one for a Switch 2.

Are these games suitable for young children?+

They were chosen as whole-room games that work for the least experienced player, and most are about people playing in the same room. Ratings differ by region, so read the one shown on the listing, and for any game with online play, look at the console's parental controls first.

Does Kirby Air Riders work on the original Switch?+

No - it is a Switch 2 game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Switch Sports, Super Mario Party Jamboree and the rest of the Switch picks here run on both the original Switch and the Switch 2.
