Four players, by setup
All four on one couch, one console. You need local split-screen or shared-screen: Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Rayman Legends, Moving Out 2, or Borderlands 3. Count your controllers before you count your friends - this is the step people forget.
All four online, same platform. Everything opens up. Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2 are the two best four-player online co-op shooters; Borderlands 3 gives you a long looter campaign to grind through together.
All four online, different platforms. Now you need crossplay, which cuts the list to Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Human: Fall Flat, Moving Out 2, and Deep Rock Galactic (PC and Xbox only - PlayStation is a separate pool). Our crossplay hub has the verified list.
If you might become five
Four-player games have a hard ceiling, and the fifth person who turns up gets to watch. If your group size fluctuates, pick something that scales: Human: Fall Flat handles up to eight, Among Us runs to fifteen, and Fall Guys squads are four but the lobby is huge. Our large groups page is built for exactly this problem.
Count your controllers before you count your friends
The most common reason a four-player night does not happen is hardware, not software. A console ships with one or two controllers; four players need four. That is a real cost, often comparable to the game itself, and it is worth checking a week before rather than an hour before.
The Switch is the mildest case - many of its four-player games work with a single Joy-Con per person, so a standard console covers two players out of the box and one extra pair gets you to four. Games built around motion controls are the exception and want a full controller each. On PlayStation, Xbox, and PC you need four full controllers, with no shortcut.
One upside worth remembering: for local play those controllers are the only extra cost. The game itself is a single copy no matter how many people are on the sofa.
Co-op or versus - decide before you buy
These are different evenings and the picks do not overlap much. Co-op (Overcooked, Deep Rock Galactic, Helldivers 2, Moving Out 2, Rayman Legends) means all four of you against the game. Nobody loses individually, mixed skill levels are absorbed rather than exposed, and the fun comes from coordination and collapse. Versus (Mario Kart, and most fighting and sports games) means four of you against each other, which is sharper and more memorable when everyone is roughly matched - and awkward when they are not.
The safe default for a group you have not played with before is co-op. Mario Kart is the versus exception worth making, because its item design deliberately keeps the trailing player in contention rather than letting a gap open up. Our co-op hub and party hub split along roughly this line.
Budget note
Four-player nights get expensive if everyone needs a copy. Local split-screen games solve this outright - one copy, four players. For online play, the cheapest four-player picks are usually Human: Fall Flat and Deep Rock Galactic, both of which go on deep discount regularly; see our budget picks for the full list. Prices shown on this page come live from Amazon and change often.
