Three is the group size games keep forgetting

Multiplayer games are designed around two and around four. Two gets the tightly authored co-op stories; four gets the squad shooters, the party kitchens, and the racing grids. Three gets left in between - either one person sits out a two-player game, or you play a four-player game permanently a member short.

The good news is that a handful of games are built for exactly three, and a much larger group of games scale to three without feeling hollow. This page separates those two things, because the difference decides whether your trio has a great evening or spends it wishing someone else would log on.

Built for three

Elden Ring Nightreign is the standout: a standalone co-op game designed around a party of three, with runs short enough to finish in an evening. It is hard, and it has no crossplay, so all three of you need to be on the same platform. Apex Legends is the free answer - three-player squads are the default format, it crossplays across everything, and nobody has to buy anything.

Those two are the only picks here where three is the intended number rather than a tolerated one, and if your trio plays together regularly you should own both.

Four-player games that are genuinely fine with three

Deep Rock Galactic is the best of them. Its four classes cover different jobs, but a trio can still cover mining, lighting, and defense, and difficulty scales to your party size. Helldivers 2 also scales, though its mission design clearly assumes four - a trio will feel it on the harder difficulties. Read our Helldivers 2 vs Deep Rock Galactic comparison if you are choosing between them.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat is the party pick that works well with three: one on prep, one on the pan, one on plates and washing up. It is arguably clearer with three than with four, because a kitchen with four people in it is mostly people colliding.

Games where three is not enough - and where three is not the limit

Skip the two-player-only titles entirely. It Takes Two, Split Fiction, A Way Out, and Portal 2 have exactly two slots and no third. If your trio keeps landing on those pages, you are looking at the wrong category - 2-player games is a genuinely different list.

In the other direction, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge seats up to six, so a trio has room to grow, and it is one of very few games where a fourth or fifth person turning up mid-evening is easy to accommodate.

One to skip

Elden Ring Nightreign is our top pick for a trio and the wrong purchase for a lot of them. It is punishing by design, it does not crossplay, and a group where one person bounces off hard difficulty will stop playing it within a week. If your three are casual, or if you are on different platforms, take Deep Rock Galactic or Overcooked instead and treat Nightreign as the thing you graduate to.

Four-player co-op with crossplay between PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, so the classic 'I'm on PlayStation, they're on Xbox' problem just goes away. Friendly fire is always on, which is a feature. There is still no Switch version, so a Switch friend gets left out.

1-4 players online co-op · Co-op action RPG

Capcom's hunting RPG supports crossplay across PS5, Xbox, and PC, and quests take up to four hunters - so a mixed-platform group can build characters together for months. Link Parties keep the same four people together across quests. It is a deep, systems-heavy game with a real learning curve, so it is a commitment rather than a one-night pick.

Pick by what your three actually want

A hard game to beat together. Elden Ring Nightreign, then Helldivers 2 on a higher difficulty. Both need voice chat and a group that enjoys losing on the way to winning.

Something free tonight. Apex Legends. Three-player squads, full crossplay, no purchase. Fortnite also works, though its squads are four.

A reliable weekly session. Deep Rock Galactic. Scales properly to three, asks nothing between sessions, and discounts often.

Chaos and laughing.Overcooked, Human: Fall Flat, or Shredder's Revenge. All three are cheap, all three take three players without complaint, and none of them require any skill to enjoy.

One long shared campaign. Monster Hunter Wilds or Borderlands 3. Both take four, both are fine with three, and both give everyone a character that gets stronger over months - see our co-op RPG page.

Same room, three people, one console

If all three of you are on the same sofa, the maths changes: you need a game with three-player localsupport, and there are fewer than you would think. Overcooked and Shredder's Revenge both do it. Sackboy handles two to four locally on PlayStation. Mario Kart and Mario Party seat four on a Switch and are perfectly happy with three, so a trio is never short-changed there - our couch co-op page has the full local list.

Watch the controller count. Three players means three controllers, and one Switch or PS5 ships with one. That is a real cost people forget when they buy a local multiplayer game for a group.

Difficulty scaling: what actually happens with three

In most four-player co-op games, enemy health and count scale with the party, so three players do not simply face 33% more work each. What does not scale is coverage. Deep Rock Galactic has four classes because four jobs need doing; with three, one job goes part-time. Helldivers 2 expects four sets of stratagems covering four roles; with three, you carry less firepower into the same objectives.

The practical advice is to drop one difficulty tier from whatever your group would pick with four. That single adjustment turns most "this feels unfair with three" complaints into a normal, winnable evening.

When the third person is the newcomer

A very common trio is two regulars plus one friend who does not usually play. In that case ignore everything above about difficulty and pick from the friendliest end: Fall Guys, Human: Fall Flat, Overcooked, or Shredder's Revenge, all of which someone can join with no explanation. Our games for friends who don't play games guide is built for exactly this situation, and how to host a game night covers the running order that keeps a new player involved.

Crossplay for a trio

Three people are more likely to be on three different systems than two people are, so check crossplay before anything else. Apex Legends, Fortnite, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Human: Fall Flat, and Monster Hunter Wilds all bridge platforms. Elden Ring Nightreign, Borderlands 3, Sackboy, and Shredder's Revenge do not. Deep Rock Galactic bridges PC and Xbox but keeps PlayStation separate. The badges on every pick above say which is which, and the crossplay hub filters the whole site that way.

The short version

If your three are on the same platform and want a challenge, buy Elden Ring Nightreign. If you are split across platforms, play Apex Legends tonight for free and buy Deep Rock Galactic or Overcooked when you want something premium. If one of you barely plays games, start with Human: Fall Flat and nobody will feel out of place.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best 3 player games to play with friends?+

Elden Ring Nightreign is built for exactly three, and Apex Legends is the best free three-player option with full crossplay. Deep Rock Galactic, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, and Helldivers 2 are four-player games that scale well to a trio.

Are there games designed specifically for 3 players?+

Yes, though they are rare. Elden Ring Nightreign is built around a party of three, and Apex Legends uses three-player squads as its default format. Most other co-op games are designed for two or four and simply tolerate three.

Do 4 player games work with only 3 players?+

Usually yes. Enemy counts and difficulty scale with party size in games like Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2. What does not scale is role coverage, so drop one difficulty tier from what you would pick with four.

What 3 player games have crossplay?+

Apex Legends, Fortnite, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Human: Fall Flat, and Monster Hunter Wilds all crossplay. Elden Ring Nightreign, Borderlands 3, Sackboy, and Shredder's Revenge are same-platform only, and Deep Rock Galactic bridges PC and Xbox but not PlayStation.

What can three people play in the same room?+

Overcooked! All You Can Eat and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge both support local play for three or more. On Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party Jamboree seat four and play fine with three. Remember you need one controller per player.

Is there a free 3 player game we can start tonight?+

Apex Legends is the obvious pick - free, crossplay, and built for trios. Fortnite and Fall Guys are also free and work fine with three, though their squads are sized for four.
