Point the guns at the game, not at each other

A shooter your group plays together is a different purchase from a shooter your group plays against each other. Competitive shooters sort people by skill within about ten minutes, and the friend who plays two hours a month ends up watching the kill feed. Co-op shooters point everyone at the same problem, which is why they hold a mixed group together far longer.

Three things decide this purchase, and they decide it before genre or graphics do: how many of you there are, which platforms you own, and how often you actually play. Get those three right and almost any pick below works. Get them wrong and you will buy a four-player game for a duo, or a PS5-and-PC game for a group with an Xbox in it.

Squad size first

Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic are built for four and both feel thin with two. Apex Legends is built for three, which makes it the free answer for the awkward trio - we have a whole page on games for exactly three players. Borderlands 3 takes four online and two in split-screen, so it is the only pick here that solves a same-couch evening. Overwatch 2 wants five, which is a lot of friends to assemble on a Tuesday.

Then platforms, because the pools do not match

This is where most groups get burned. Helldivers 2 crossplays across PS5, PC, and Xbox but does not exist on Switch. Deep Rock Galactic crossplays between PC and Xbox, with PlayStation in a separate pool. Call of Duty and the free titles crossplay across all three big platforms. Those are three different answers to "can we all play together?", and no setting fixes a missing version. Our crossplay hub sorts games by which pairings genuinely work, and the crossplay setup guide covers the switches you still have to flip once you own the right game.

Then honesty about how often you play

Helldivers 2, Call of Duty, Apex, and Overwatch are live-service games with seasons, battle passes, and metas that move while you are away. A group that plays weekly gets enormous value from that. A group that plays once a month comes back behind, relearns the controls, and quietly stops. Deep Rock Galactic and Borderlands 3 ask nothing between sessions - you load in, you play, you leave. For an irregular crew that difference matters more than any feature comparison.

Free before paid

Three of the picks below cost nothing: Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Fortnite. If your group has never played a shooter together, start there tonight, find out whether everyone enjoys it, and buy the premium ones afterwards. That is not a compromise - it is the cheapest way to discover that two of your five friends hate shooters. Our free games hub covers the rest of the no-money options.

One to skip

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7is the pick to skip for a casual group, however good it is. It is a very large install, it is priced as a headline release, and its competitive multiplayer will sort your friends into "plays a lot" and "doesn't" inside one match. For a crew that wants to shoot things together rather than at each other, Deep Rock Galactic costs a fraction as much and never makes anybody feel like the weak link. Buy Call of Duty when your group has proved it wants a regular competitive night.

The picks, in depth

Helldivers 2 cover art

Helldivers 2

PS5PCXboxCrossplay: Yes - PS5 + PC + Xbox crossplay

Best for: A squad split across PS5, PC, and Xbox that wants chaotic 4-player co-op.

1-4 players online co-op · Co-op shooter

Four-player co-op with crossplay between PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, so the classic 'I'm on PlayStation, they're on Xbox' problem just goes away. Friendly fire is always on, which is a feature. There is still no Switch version, so a Switch friend gets left out.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

PS5XboxPCCrossplay: Yes - full crossplay

Best for: A competitive group across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Up to 40 online · Shooter

The current Call of Duty, and still full crossplay across all three big platforms - plus a co-op campaign and round-based Zombies if you would rather team up than compete. It is a big install and a big commitment, so it is overkill for a casual one-night session and ideal for a regular crew. Amazon carries the Xbox and PC digital code; PS5 players buy it on the PlayStation Store.

Co-op shooters by what your evening looks like

A tense mission with a real chance of failure. Helldivers 2. Friendly fire never turns off, extraction is genuinely nervous, and the whole thing works because people are talking. Read the full Helldivers 2 review before four of you buy copies.

The same good time every week, no homework. Deep Rock Galactic. Four classes that genuinely need each other, procedural caves, and no seasonal pressure. It is also the cheapest premium pick here - see the Deep Rock Galactic review.

Two of you on one couch. Borderlands 3, which still supports split-screen on console. Nothing else on this page does. Our split-screen page covers the rest of that category.

Nobody wants to spend money. Apex Legends for a trio, Overwatch 2 for five, Fortnite for a group that includes people who do not usually play shooters at all.

Why four is the magic number

Co-op shooters converge on four players for a practical reason: four is the largest group where everyone can still hear each other, see each other on screen, and matter to the outcome. Below four, encounters designed for a full squad feel like you are missing people. Above four, someone is always doing something nobody else witnessed.

That is why Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Borderlands 3 all cap at four and why they all feel best at exactly that number. If your group is regularly five or six, you are better served by a party game that scales - our large groups page ranks picks that genuinely handle it - or by Overwatch 2, which is built for five and free.

Friendly fire, difficulty, and the friend who is new to shooters

Every game here lets a newcomer join, but they demand very different things. Deep Rock Galactic is the gentlest: pick the class with the big gun, follow the group, and you are useful in ten minutes. Helldivers 2 will have a new player killing teammates by accident on their first night - it is unavoidable, so warn them it is coming and start on a low difficulty. Apex has the steepest movement skill ceiling of the free picks; Fortnite is the friendliest.

If the friend you are trying to include does not really play games, a shooter may be the wrong genre entirely. Our games for friends who don't play games page is the more honest starting point.

What each one actually costs a group

The number that matters is not the sticker price, it is the sticker price multiplied by how many of you have to buy it. Four copies of a headline release is a real commitment; four copies of Deep Rock Galactic, which discounts often, is not. Nothing on this page has a Friend's Pass, so unlike the story co-op games there is no one-copy shortcut - if that is what you need, read games where only one person has to buy it. Live prices sit in the table at the top of this page and update daily.

The free trio changes that maths completely. Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Fortnite cost a group of five exactly nothing, forever, with cosmetics as the only spend. If budget is the binding constraint, start there and treat the premium picks as an upgrade you make once you know the group turns up. Our budget picks apply the same logic to the rest of the site.

Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus change the answer

Deep Rock Galactic has been a Game Pass regular, and subscription catalogs rotate constantly. Before buying anything on this page, check what is already included in the subscription your group has - it is the single easiest way to get four people into the same co-op game for nothing extra. Our Xbox page covers the Game Pass angle in more detail, and the PC page covers the same for a keyboard-and-mouse group.

The one-line answers

Four friends on PS5 and PC: Helldivers 2. Four friends on PC and Xbox: Deep Rock Galactic. Exactly three of you, no budget: Apex Legends. Two of you on one sofa: Borderlands 3. A mixed group that includes non-shooter people: Fortnite. A regular competitive night: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Two follow-ups. Our Borderlands 3 review goes into the split-screen support and the total absence of crossplay, which is the one thing that decides whether it works for your group. And if the real problem is that a different three or four people turn up every week, drop-in drop-out co-op games is the more useful list than any shooter ranking - Deep Rock Galactic tops it for exactly that reason.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best co-op shooter to play with friends?+

Helldivers 2 for a squad of four on PS5, PC, or Xbox, and Deep Rock Galactic for a squad of four on PC and Xbox or for a group that plays irregularly. Apex Legends is the best free option and is built for exactly three players.

Which co-op shooters have crossplay?+

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Helldivers 2 all crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Deep Rock Galactic crossplays between PC and Xbox, with PlayStation in a separate pool. Borderlands 3 has no crossplay.

Are there any split-screen co-op shooters?+

Borderlands 3 is the split-screen pick on console - two players on one screen. Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Apex Legends, and Overwatch 2 are online only, so everyone needs their own device.

What is the best free co-op shooter?+

Apex Legends if you are a trio, Overwatch 2 if you can field five, and Fortnite if the group includes people who do not normally play shooters. All three are free with optional cosmetics and full crossplay.

How many players do co-op shooters support?+

Most cap at four: Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Borderlands 3 are all one to four. Apex Legends uses three-player squads, Overwatch 2 is 5v5, and Fortnite squads are four.

Is Call of Duty worth it just for co-op with friends?+

Only for a group that plays regularly. Black Ops 7 has co-op Zombies and full crossplay, but it is a premium price and a very large install. For pure co-op on a budget, Deep Rock Galactic delivers more for far less.
