Rock and Stone - four-player co-op that asks nothing between sessions

Short verdict: for a group of four that plays irregularly, wants real teamwork, and does not want another live-service commitment, Deep Rock Galactic is the best value in co-op gaming. Four distinct classes that genuinely need each other, procedurally generated caves you can dig through in any direction, and a price that regularly drops to pocket money. Check the crossplay pool before buying: it bridges PC and Xbox, and PlayStation sits separately.

You are four space dwarves mining a hostile planet. One drills tunnels, one builds platforms and zip lines, one carries the heavy weapon, one scouts ahead and lights the caves with flares. The objective is usually simple - collect the thing, survive the swarm, get back to the drop pod - and the fun comes almost entirely from four people solving a cave together.

The four classes are the whole design

This is what separates it from every other squad shooter. In most co-op games the classes are different flavors of damage. Here they are different jobs: the Driller makes routes, the Engineer makes floors, the Gunner makes bridges and firepower, the Scout makes light and reaches high things. A team missing one of them physically cannot do certain parts of a cave as easily.

That produces the thing groups actually want from co-op: everybody is necessary and everybody knows why. It also means the game plays best at exactly four - though it scales down honestly, which is why we recommend it for trios on our 3-player page as well.

Crossplay, and the PlayStation caveat

Crossplay works between PC and Xbox. PlayStation is a separate pool. That is unusual enough that it is worth saying twice, because a group of four with one PS5 player will discover it after buying rather than before.

If your group is on PC and Xbox, this is close to a perfect purchase and our PC + Xbox page lists what else bridges those two. If your group includes a PS5 player, Helldivers 2 is the equivalent pick and reaches all three of PS5, PC, and Xbox - see PS5 + PC.

Why irregular groups love it

Nothing expires. There are no seasons you fall behind in, no meta that shifts while you are away, and no reason to feel punished for missing a month. You load in, you do a mission that lasts twenty to forty minutes, you leave. For a crew of adults with jobs and children, that is a far more realistic proposition than a live-service shooter - and it is the single biggest practical difference between this and Helldivers 2.

One to skip

Skip it if your group wants spectacle. Deep Rock Galactic is a mid-budget game and looks like one - blocky, functional, and much less impressive on a screenshot than Helldivers 2 or Call of Duty. If what your friends want is a cinematic co-op experience to show off a new console, this is not it. It is a game that wins people over in the third hour, not the first minute, and a group that judges by trailers will bounce.

1-4 players online co-op · Co-op shooter

Four-player co-op with crossplay between PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, so the classic 'I'm on PlayStation, they're on Xbox' problem just goes away. Friendly fire is always on, which is a feature. There is still no Switch version, so a Switch friend gets left out.

1-4 players online co-op · Co-op action RPG

Capcom's hunting RPG supports crossplay across PS5, Xbox, and PC, and quests take up to four hunters - so a mixed-platform group can build characters together for months. Link Parties keep the same four people together across quests. It is a deep, systems-heavy game with a real learning curve, so it is a commitment rather than a one-night pick.

Who should buy it

A group of four on PC and Xbox. The core case. Full crossplay between those two, four roles, and a price that makes four copies genuinely affordable.

An irregular crew. No seasonal pressure, no homework, no falling behind. The most under-rated feature in co-op gaming.

Groups that want to feel like a team. The class design does more for this than voice-chat coordination does in most shooters.

Anyone on a budget. It discounts often and heavily. Our budget picks put it in context against the rest of the site.

Who should skip it

Groups with a PS5 player and a PC player. Separate crossplay pools. Take Helldivers 2 instead.

Pairs. It works, but two dwarves cover two of four jobs and the caves feel emptier. Our 2-player page has better options.

People who need a story. There is a world and a lot of character, but no campaign to follow. It is a job you do repeatedly, and the repetition is the appeal.

How it compares

vs Helldivers 2. The comparison everyone is actually making. Helldivers is the bigger, louder, more cinematic game with an ongoing war and PS5-plus-PC crossplay. Deep Rock is cheaper, calmer between sessions, and bridges PC and Xbox instead. Neither is better; they suit different groups, and we lay it out fully in Helldivers 2 vs Deep Rock Galactic.

vs Borderlands 3. Borderlands has the campaign, the loot, and console split-screen; Deep Rock has crossplay and better teamwork design. Borderlands is the better pick for two people on one sofa, Deep Rock for four people in four houses.

vs Monster Hunter Wilds. Both are four-player, both are about learning a role. Monster Hunter is a much larger commitment with far more depth, and it crossplays across all three platforms. Deep Rock is the one you can play cold after two months away - see our co-op RPG page for the deeper end.

Difficulty and bringing in a newcomer

The difficulty range is wide, and low hazard levels are a genuinely gentle introduction - a new player can pick Gunner, follow the group, and contribute in ten minutes. There is no friendly fire drama on the scale of Helldivers 2, and getting downed is recoverable by any teammate.

The learning curve that does exist is spatial. Caves go in every direction, and new players get lost, fall down holes, and mine themselves into corners. That is funny rather than frustrating, which is roughly the whole personality of the game.

What it costs a group

Four copies of Deep Rock Galactic is one of the cheapest ways to get four people into a premium co-op game, and it has been a regular fixture in subscription catalogs, so check what your group already has access to before buying anything. That single check saves more money than any sale. Our Xbox page covers the Game Pass angle and the Steam page covers the PC side.

There is no season pass gating gameplay, and cosmetic packs are optional. Live prices for the console listing are in the table above.

Verdict

Deep Rock Galactic is the co-op game we recommend most often to normal adults with unreliable schedules, because it is the one that never punishes you for turning up late. The class design makes four people feel like a crew rather than four damage numbers, and the price makes it an easy sell to a group. Just check the crossplay pools first - PC and Xbox together, PlayStation apart - and if your group is on PS5 and PC, read the Helldivers 2 review instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Deep Rock Galactic worth buying?+

Yes for a group of four on PC or Xbox that plays irregularly and wants genuine teamwork rather than another live-service commitment. It is one of the best-value premium co-op games available and discounts often.

Does Deep Rock Galactic have crossplay?+

It crossplays between PC and Xbox. PlayStation players are in a separate pool, so a group with a PS5 player and a PC player cannot play together - Helldivers 2 or Diablo IV are the alternatives there.

How many players is Deep Rock Galactic?+

One to four players in online co-op. It is designed around four classes that each do a different job, so it is at its best with a full squad, though it scales honestly for three.

Is Deep Rock Galactic good for two players?+

It works, but two dwarves only cover two of the four roles and the caves feel emptier. A pair is usually better served by a game built for two - Portal 2 or It Takes Two are the obvious picks.

Deep Rock Galactic or Helldivers 2?+

Deep Rock if your group is on PC and Xbox, plays irregularly, or wants something cheaper. Helldivers 2 if your squad includes a PS5 player, plays consistently, and wants a bigger-budget game with an ongoing campaign.

Do you need to play regularly to keep up?+

No, and that is the point. There are no seasons to fall behind in and no shifting meta, so a group can return after two months and pick up exactly where it left off.
