Two-player, by what you want from the evening
A proper story you finish together. It Takes Two or Split Fiction. Roughly twelve to fourteen hours each, constantly introducing new ideas, and both end with a genuine sense of having completed something as a pair.
Puzzles and problem-solving.Portal 2's co-op campaign is separate from its single-player story and built entirely for two - it is the cheapest genuinely great pick on this page by a wide margin.
Something to keep coming back to. Stardew Valley or Minecraft. No ending, no pressure, and progress that persists between sessions - the right choice if you play together regularly rather than in one big push.
Chaos and laughing at each other. Overcooked or Human: Fall Flat. Both scale beyond two, but both work fine with a pair, and both are far cheaper than the story co-op games.
Two players, one screen, one copy
If you are on the same couch, local split-screen means a single copy covers both of you with no Friend's Pass needed - It Takes Two, A Way Out, Portal 2, Borderlands 3, and Overcooked all support it. That is the cheapest possible two-player setup and the reason couch co-op is worth checking before you buy two of anything.
Steam adds one more option worth knowing about: Remote Play Together streams a local co-op game to a friend over the internet, and only the host needs to own it. For two PC players that turns a same-couch game into an online one at no extra cost - see our Steam page.
Two-player co-op vs. two players in a bigger game
Worth separating, because it is the most common mistake on this topic. A game builtfor two - It Takes Two, Portal 2's co-op campaign, A Way Out - tunes every encounter around a pair. A four-player game played by two is a different experience: enemy counts and objectives usually scale, but the design still assumes roles you do not have, and it often feels like you are two people short rather than a duo.
Overcooked is the honorable exception and the reason it appears on this list. It scales genuinely well to two, and arguably plays better with a pair than a four, because two people can divide a kitchen without three overlapping conversations. Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2 do not scale as gracefully - they are excellent games that a duo will enjoy less than a squad would.
Checklist before you buy
1. Same platform or different? Different platforms eliminates It Takes Two, Portal 2, A Way Out, and Stardew Valley outright. Split Fiction is the premium answer; Minecraft and Human: Fall Flat are the cheaper ones.
2. Same room or apart? Same room means one copy covers both of you for any split-screen title, which is the cheapest two-player setup there is.
3. One evening or an ongoing thing? A finite campaign (It Takes Two, Split Fiction, A Way Out, Portal 2) versus something persistent (Stardew Valley, Minecraft). Pairs who play weekly are usually happier with the second kind, and pairs with a free weekend want the first.
4. How much does the other person play games? If the answer is "rarely", prioritize the asymmetric titles or the no-fail-state ones and avoid anything on a timer.
If you are a couple
The picks overlap heavily but the emphasis differs - a couple playing regularly usually wants something calm and open-ended alongside the big story games. We have a dedicated co-op games for couples page, and games to play with your partner covers the long-distance version.
And if the two of you turn into three, be aware that almost nothing on this page adapts - two-player games are built for two and have no third slot. At that point you are looking at a different category entirely, and the co-op hub ranks games by group size so you can find the ones that genuinely scale.
If you want a story with an ending
Several picks here are full campaigns rather than open-ended games, and our co-op campaigns page ranks them on that basis - what a purpose-built co-op campaign is, whose save the progress belongs to, and which ones let one person buy for two. For the two Hazelight games specifically, A Way Out versus It Takes Two is the comparison most pairs actually need, and the A Way Out review explains why we name it a skip on some pages and still recommend it here.
