A game with an ending is a different commitment from a game without one

Most multiplayer games are designed to never finish. Seasons, battle passes, ranked ladders, a new event every six weeks - the business model needs you back on Thursday. That works for a group that plays every Thursday. It is actively hostile to two or four friends who want to start something, play it through, talk about the ending, and then move on to something else.

A co-op campaign is the alternative: a story with a beginning and an end, built to be played by more than one person, that you can genuinely complete. The right one gives a group something rarer than another lobby - a shared thing you finished.

What separates a real co-op campaign from a single-player game with a second body

The distinction is worth understanding before you spend money, because a lot of games advertise co-op and deliver the weaker version of it.

Built for two, or padded for two? In a purpose-built co-op campaign, some puzzles cannot be solved by one person - each player has an ability or a position the other lacks. It Takes Two, Portal 2 and Split Fiction are all built this way. In the padded version, the second player is a spare gun, and everything they do could have been done by the first.

Whose save is it? This decides who can play when. In some campaigns, progress belongs to the host, so if that person is not online the group cannot continue - and anyone who joined does not keep what they did. In others, everyone keeps their progress. Check before a group of four commits thirty hours to something.

Does one person have to buy it?The Hazelight games - It Takes Two, Split Fiction and A Way Out - include a Friend's Pass, so a second player joins free. That halves the price of a co-op evening and it is the single most under-used feature in this category. Our one copy, two players guide lists every legitimate way to do it.

How long these actually take

We do not publish hour counts, because they vary wildly with how much a group talks and how often it gets stuck, and inventing a precise figure would be dishonest. What we can say usefully is the shape: the two-player story games here are a small number of evenings, the LEGO and Rayman-style games are longer but stop-startable at any point, and the loot campaigns are the ones that will still be going in two months. Pick the shape that matches how often your group actually meets, not the one you wish it met.

One to skip

Diablo IV is on this list, but do not buy it for the campaign alone. It has a real, finishable story, and playing it with friends is a good time - but the game around it is built for seasons, and a group that only wants the campaign is paying full price for the smallest part of what it sells. If a finished loot campaign is what you want, Borderlands 3 costs a fraction as much, ends properly, and has nothing to keep up with afterwards. The full comparison covers when Diablo IV is the right call anyway.

It Takes Two cover art

It Takes Two

PS5XboxPCSwitchCrossplay: No - same platform only

Best for: Two people who want one story built entirely around working together.

2 players, online or split-screen · Co-op action-adventure

The gold standard for two-player co-op: every mechanic is designed for two, and the Friend's Pass lets a second player join free. Split-screen the whole way through. Skip it if you're a group of three or more - it is strictly two.

A decade on, still the best two-player puzzle co-op ever made, and often under $5 on PC. Split-screen or online. It is same-platform co-op and PC-focused - but for two puzzle-minded friends it is unbeatable value.

The two-player campaigns

It Takes Twois the best co-op campaign ever made and the easiest recommendation on this site. Every level introduces a new pair of abilities, discards them at the end, and moves on, so it never settles into a routine. Split-screen the whole way through, online or in the same room, and the Friend's Pass covers the second player. Strictly two - a third friend has to watch. Full review.

Split Fictionis the same studio's newer take with the same structure and the same one-copy deal, plus crossplay - so a pair on different platforms can play it, which It Takes Two never allowed. If your two are on a PS5 and a PC, this is the one.

Portal 2 has a separate two-player campaign that is not the single-player game with a friend attached - it is its own set of chambers, built from scratch around two people each holding a portal gun. It is over a decade old, it is usually a few dollars, and it is still the best value in co-op. Review.

A Way Outis the most cinematic and the least replayable: a prison-break told entirely in split-screen, even online, that you will play once. As a single unforgettable evening for two people it is excellent value with the Friend's Pass; as a purchase to return to, it is not. Review.

The campaigns for three and four

Borderlands 3 is the flagship four-player campaign - a complete looter-shooter story with split-screen on console, no seasonal commitment, and a huge amount of game for the money. No crossplay, so line the platforms up first. Review.

Diablo IV brings full crossplay and cross-progression to the same genre, which matters enormously for a group spread across platforms. Read the skip note above before buying.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the family answer: nine films of drop-in, drop-out two-player co-op that is almost impossible to get properly stuck in. Local only. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the PlayStation equivalent for two to four, with a couple of late stages that will test a friendship.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge seats up to six, which is more than almost anything else here, and a full run is short enough for one evening. Rayman Legends is the four-player platformer that never leaves a weaker player behind for long - the pick for mixed skill levels.

Matching a campaign to your group

If there are exactly two of you, start with the two-player page; if there are exactly three, the player count is the constraint that decides everything and the three-player page is built around it. If the second player is your partner, the couples list filters for tone rather than mechanics.

If your group can never get the same people online twice, a campaign may be the wrong format entirely - a story you all abandon at the halfway point is worse than no story. Our drop-in drop-out guide covers the games built for exactly that problem, and the time-zone guide handles the version of it caused by geography rather than scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best co-op campaign games?+

It Takes Two is the strongest co-op campaign ever made, with Split Fiction as the crossplay alternative and Portal 2 as the budget one. For groups of three or four, Borderlands 3 is the best finishable campaign, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the family pick.

What makes a game a real co-op campaign rather than co-op mode?+

In a purpose-built co-op campaign, some challenges cannot be solved alone - each player holds an ability or a position the other lacks. It Takes Two, Portal 2, and Split Fiction all work that way. In a weaker co-op mode the second player is effectively a spare gun.

Do both players need to buy a co-op campaign?+

Not always. It Takes Two, Split Fiction, and A Way Out all include a Friend's Pass, so a second player joins free from their own machine. For most other campaigns each player needs their own copy, though local split-screen never does.

Do co-op campaigns save progress for everyone?+

It depends on the game. In some, progress belongs to the host, so the group cannot continue without that person and joining players do not keep what they did. That is worth checking before a group commits thirty hours to something.

What is the best co-op campaign for four players?+

Borderlands 3 - a complete looter-shooter story built for four, with split-screen on console and no seasonal content to keep up with. Diablo IV is the crossplay alternative if your group is spread across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Are there co-op campaigns for a group that plays irregularly?+

Campaigns are the hardest format for an irregular group, because progress is shared and stalls when someone is missing. If your group's numbers change every night, drop-in drop-out games are the better structure and we keep a separate guide for them.
