The best two-player puzzle campaign ever made, for pocket change

Short verdict:Portal 2's co-op campaign is a separate, purpose-built two-player game bolted onto an already excellent single-player one, and it costs less than a sandwich most of the year. If two of you like solving things and you are on the same platform, there is no better value in co-op gaming. It is over a decade old and it does not matter.

Two robots, four portals, one test chamber at a time. Because each player has their own portal gun, the puzzles are built around things one person physically cannot do - hold a button while the other crosses, launch each other through a portal, coordinate two moves at the same instant. It is co-op in the strictest sense.

Why it still works

The co-op campaign is not a mode where two people play the single-player game together. It is its own set of chambers, its own story beats, and its own escalation, designed from scratch for a pair. That is rare - most games that advertise co-op are single-player games with a second body added.

It also has an unusually generous approach to failure. There is no penalty for dying, no timer, and no resource to run out of. You will get a puzzle wrong repeatedly, and the game simply lets you try again, which is exactly the right design for two people arguing about geometry.

The catch: same platform, PC-focused

Portal 2's co-op is same-platform, and in practice this is a PC game now - that is where it is cheapest, most reliably supported, and where Steam's features add the most. If you are both on PC, this is close to a perfect purchase.

It also has a genuinely useful trick: because it supports local split-screen, one copy can cover two people in the room, and Steam's Remote Play Together extends that to a friend over the internet - see games where only one person has to buy it for how that works.

Who it is for

Two friends who enjoy thinking, who do not mind being stuck for ten minutes, and who can talk to each other while playing. Voice chat is not optional here - the puzzles require describing what you are looking at, which is the best kind of co-op conversation. Who should buy it

Two PC players on a budget. Nothing else in co-op delivers this much for this little.

Pairs who like solving things. Puzzle co-op is a small category and this is the best of it.

Two people in the same room. Split-screen means one copy covers both - see our split-screen page.

Anyone who missed it. The writing and voice acting are still better than most games released this year, and the single-player campaign comes with it.

Who should skip it

Groups of three or more. Two slots. No third. Our 3-player page is the right list.

Mixed-platform pairs. Same-platform co-op. Split Fiction is the crossplay alternative for a story-driven duo.

People who want something to keep playing. The co-op campaign is a few evenings and then it is done. For an ongoing thing, look at Stardew Valley or Minecraft.

How it compares

vs A Way Out.A Way Out is a cinematic story you play in split-screen with a Friend's Pass, so only one of you buys it. It is a one-playthrough experience. Portal 2 is the one to buy if you would rather think than watch.

vs Human: Fall Flat. Both are cheap physics-adjacent co-op. Human: Fall Flat is comedy for up to eight with crossplay; Portal 2 is precision for exactly two on one platform. Different evenings entirely.

How long it takes

Expect a handful of evenings for the co-op campaign, depending on how badly you get stuck. There is also a large body of community-made co-op chambers on PC, which is where pairs who finish it and want more should look - that alone can double or triple the value.

The single-player campaign is separate and excellent, and it is worth playing on your own afterwards. Buying the game gets you both.

What it costs

This is the cheapest premium recommendation on the entire site. It has been a permanent fixture in PC sales for years, and even at full price it is a fraction of a modern release. For two people that means the entire co-op evening costs less than a coffee each. Verdict

Portal 2 remains the best answer to "we have two people and almost no money". The co-op campaign is purpose-built, the writing is superb, and split-screen or Remote Play Together means one copy can cover both of you. Buy it unless one of you hates being stuck - in which case buy It Takes Two and enjoy a very different, much more expensive, equally good evening.
