The short answer: budget decides this more than taste does

Buy Portal 2 if you want the most co-op for the least money. Its two-player campaign is purpose-built, it is one of the best puzzle games ever made, and it costs a fraction of a modern release. For two people on PC with a small budget, nothing competes.

Buy It Takes Two if you want one big shared experience.It is longer, more varied, more spectacular, and the Friend's Pass means only one of you buys it - so the real cost is half what the sticker suggests.

Both are two-player only. Both are same-platform. Neither will work for a group of three, and neither crossplays - if that is your situation, Split Fiction is the answer and that comparison lives here.

The Friend's Pass changes the price comparison

On paper It Takes Two costs many times what Portal 2 does. In practice, one purchase covers both players, because the second player downloads a free companion client and plays the whole campaign. So the honest comparison is one copy of It Takes Two against onecopy of Portal 2 - since Portal 2's split-screen and Steam's Remote Play Together also let one purchase cover two people.

What each evening feels like

Portal 2: two robots, four portals, and a series of test chambers that get progressively more devious. Long silences, then someone shouts the answer. Failure costs nothing, so you experiment endlessly. It is a thinking game and it is very funny.

It Takes Two: a constantly changing action-adventure where nearly every level hands the two of you a new pair of asymmetric abilities. You are rarely stuck for long; you are frequently surprised. It is a rollercoaster rather than a puzzle box.

Length and structure

Portal 2's co-op campaign runs to a handful of evenings, and community-made chambers on PC extend it considerably afterwards. It Takes Two is a substantially longer single arc - a proper campaign with a beginning, middle, and end that most pairs finish across a few weekends.

If your pair wants something with a definite ending you will remember, It Takes Two is built for that. If you want something to dip into cheaply and finish quickly, Portal 2 is.

Platforms and how you play together

Portal 2 is same-platform co-op and is effectively a PC game today - that is where it is cheapest and best supported, and where Remote Play Together turns split-screen into online play at no extra cost.

Two people who like puzzles. Portal 2, easily. Puzzle co-op is a small category and this is the best thing in it.

A pair with almost no budget. Portal 2.

One person who plays a lot and one who does not. It Takes Two. Its asymmetric abilities mean the less experienced player always has a clearly defined job, and there is no fail state to speak of.

Two people in different houses on the same platform.Either - both support online play - but It Takes Two's Friend's Pass makes it a single purchase, which is often the deciding factor.

Do not overlook the rest of what you are buying

Portal 2 includes an entire single-player campaign alongside the co-op one, and it is one of the most celebrated games ever made. That is a lot of value in a package most people buy for the co-op alone.

It costs so little that it is not really a competing purchase - it is an evening you can afford this week, and if your pair enjoys it, you have learned something useful about what you both like.
