Who should buy it
A squad of three or four across PS5 and PC. The core case, and the one it serves better than anything else.
Groups that play regularly and use voice. The game is designed around coordination and an ongoing campaign. A weekly crew gets enormous value.
Anyone who wants co-op with real stakes. Missions can fail, friendly fire is permanent, and extraction is genuinely tense. If your group finds that thrilling rather than frustrating, this is the pick.
Who should skip it
Xbox and Switch players. Not available. There is no workaround.
Pairs. It works with two, but the mission design assumes four and the difficulty scaling makes a duo's life harder than it needs to be. Our 2-player page has better options.
Anyone who wants a relaxed evening. It is loud, difficult, and demanding. For a low-stress group night, Overcooked or Human: Fall Flat is the better call.
Groups on a tight budget. It is a premium release. Deep Rock Galactic delivers four-player co-op for considerably less - see our budget picks.
How it compares
vs Deep Rock Galactic. The closest comparison and the one most people are actually deciding between. Deep Rock is cheaper, less demanding, leaves PlayStation in a pool of its own, and is better for an irregular group. Helldivers is the bigger spectacle with the ongoing campaign. We compare them properly in Helldivers 2 vs Deep Rock Galactic.
vs Diablo IV. Also four-player, also live-service, but full crossplay across every platform plus cross-progression. Helldivers 2 matches it everywhere except Switch, so a Switch friend is the reason to pick Diablo IV.
vs Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Full crossplay across PS5, Xbox, and PC, and a co-op Zombies mode. The pick if you want competitive multiplayer alongside your co-op - Helldivers 2 is purely cooperative.
Stratagems, and why the game is about typing under pressure
Your heavy weapons, resupplies, vehicles, and airstrikes are all called down from orbit by entering a short directional code on the d-pad. Doing that while being chased is the core tension of the game - it is not a shooter where you simply aim better, it is one where you have to stay calm enough to input a sequence with something enormous bearing down on you.
It also creates the friendly-fire comedy. A misplaced airstrike lands where your squadmate is standing, and there is no undo. Groups either find this the funniest thing in multiplayer gaming or they find it maddening, and it is genuinely worth knowing which kind of group you have before four of you buy it.
Progression and the live campaign
Missions feed into a persistent war effort that shifts between sessions, and new weapons, enemies, and objectives arrive over time. For a group that plays weekly this is the game's greatest strength - there is always something changed to come back to.
For an irregular group it is the weakness. Return after two months and the meta has moved, your unlocks are behind, and the war is somewhere else entirely. That is the single clearest reason to choose Deep Rock Galactic instead, which asks nothing of you between sessions - the full argument is in Helldivers 2 vs Deep Rock Galactic.
Difficulty and bringing in a newcomer
Difficulty is selectable across a wide range, and the lower tiers are a genuinely gentle introduction - a new player can contribute on their first evening. The friction is not the enemies, it is the friendly fire: an inexperienced player will kill teammates by accident, repeatedly, and how your group reacts to that determines whether they come back. Introduce someone on a low difficulty, warn them it will happen, and it is fine.
Cost and what you are committing to
It is a premium one-off purchase with free content updates and optional cosmetics - there is no subscription and no paywalled gameplay. But it is priced as a headline release, and a squad of four is buying four copies. If that is a stretch, Deep Rock Galactic delivers four-player co-op for considerably less and discounts far more often; see our budget picks. Live prices are in the table above.
Verdict
Helldivers 2 is the best four-player co-op shooter for a committed squad on PS5, PC, or Xbox, and the friendly-fire design gives it a personality that its more polished rivals lack. The two questions to settle before buying are platform - everyone but a Switch player is covered - and consistency, because a live-service co-op game rewards a group that turns up. Get both right and few games give a squad more. Our Steam page and PS5 page put it in context on each platform.
