Five is the group size the industry forgot

Co-op games are built for four. It is the number that fits a controller port layout, a squad, a party of adventurers, a kitchen. Almost every great co-op game on this site - Overcooked, Deep Rock Galactic, Helldivers 2, Borderlands 3 - stops dead at four.

So when five of you turn up, someone is spectating. And the person who ends up spectating is usually the same person every time, because it is whoever was slowest to say yes. That is how a five-person friend group quietly becomes a four-person friend group.

The fix is not to squeeze five into a four-slot game. It is to pick from the games that genuinely take five or more - and there are more of them than the four-player default suggests, including one that is literally built around the number.

Three shapes that solve five

Games designed for exactly five. The rarest and most satisfying answer. Dead by Daylight is four survivors against one player-controlled killer - five people, all essential, none of them a spare. If your group of five wants one game to make its own, this is the one nobody else will suggest. Overwatch 2 is the other: 5v5 hero shooting with defined roles, free to play, so a full five-stack is exactly one team.

Games that take six or more, so five is comfortable. Better than games where five is the hard ceiling, because a sixth friend turning up does not break anything. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge seats six simultaneously, locally or online. Human: Fall Flat takes eight with crossplay. Terraria and Minecraft take eight or more and cost almost nothing per hour.

Games that scale to anything. The safety net for a group whose numbers change every week. Among Us runs from four to fifteen, The Jackbox Party Pack takes up to ten from their phones, and Fall Guys and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate both handle a crowd without anyone sitting out.

One to skip

Do not solve five by rotating one person out of a four-player game. It sounds fair and it never is - the person waiting drifts to their phone, misses the run everyone is talking about, and stops turning up. If your group is genuinely five and the game you want stops at four, the honest options are to play something else from the table above, or to run two sessions of a game that scales. Rotating a person out is how five becomes four permanently, and it is worth being blunt about that rather than pretending it is a workable plan.

Up to 6 players, local + online · Beat 'em up

One of the very few games that seats six players at once - the official line is 'up to 6 players simultaneously', locally or online. Nobody needs to be good at games to enjoy it. A full run is short, and no crossplay is listed, so everyone online needs the same platform.

The picks, and who each suits

Shredder's Revenge is the recommendation if you read one line. Six slots means five plays with room to spare, a full run fits in an evening, nobody needs to be good at video games, and it is usually cheap. The catch is that no crossplay is listed, so everyone online needs the same platform - it is at its best with five people in one room.

Dead by Daylight is the pick if your five want a game to get properly good at together. Four survivors, one killer, full crossplay across every platform, and an enormous roster. It is not usually stocked on Amazon, so check the store price directly. Skip if anyone in the group genuinely dislikes horror - and ask, rather than assuming.

Overwatch 2 costs nothing and turns five people into a complete team with roles, which is a different and more coordinated evening than most of this list. It is competitive, so it suits a group that enjoys losing together as much as winning.

The Jackbox Party Pack is the one where four of your five need nothing at all - one person owns it, everyone else joins from a phone with a room code, and it works over a video call as well as in a room. For a five that is half in person and half remote, it is the cleanest answer on the page. Full review.

Among Us is free on phones, has full crossplay, and is the only game here that gets better when a sixth and seventh person appear. It also happens to work perfectly over a call, which is why it anchors our long-distance hub. Review here.

Human: Fall Flat, Minecraft and Terraria are the long-haul picks: eight or more players, crossplay, very low prices, and no session structure to work around. Smash Ultimate handles eight locally on a Switch, and Fall Guys is the free no-pressure option.

If your five is really four plus one remote

A very common shape: four people in a room, one on a phone or a PC somewhere else. The picks that cover it are the crossplay ones - Among Us, Human: Fall Flat, Minecraft, Terraria, Dead by Daylight and Fall Guys all put a remote fifth in the same session. Jackbox does it differently, by screen share, and works just as well.

The split-screen and online page covers the related trick of two people on one couch joining friends elsewhere, which is how a lot of five-person groups actually assemble.

Other group sizes

The rest of the player-count axis is broken out separately, because the right answer changes completely with the number: two players, three players, four players, and large groups of six and up. If your five includes people who do not really play games, our page for that is the better starting point than any player count.

Frequently asked questions

What games can 5 players play together?+

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge seats six so five fits comfortably, Dead by Daylight is built for exactly five as four survivors against one killer, and Overwatch 2 is a free 5v5. Among Us, The Jackbox Party Pack, Human: Fall Flat, Minecraft, and Terraria all scale past five.

Why do so many co-op games stop at four players?+

Four is the number consoles, squads, and party design have been built around for decades - four controller slots, four-person fireteams, four-seat kitchens. It is a convention rather than a technical limit, but it is why a group of five keeps benching someone.

Is there a game designed for exactly 5 players?+

Dead by Daylight is the clearest one - four survivors versus one player-controlled killer, so all five people have a distinct job. Overwatch 2 is the other, with 5v5 team play, and it is free.

What should we do if our game only supports four?+

Play something else from this list rather than rotating one person out. The person waiting drifts away, misses the session everyone talks about afterwards, and gradually stops joining - which turns a group of five into a group of four.

What works if one of our five is somewhere else?+

Any of the crossplay picks - Among Us, Human: Fall Flat, Minecraft, Terraria, Dead by Daylight, and Fall Guys all put a remote player in the same session. The Jackbox Party Pack solves it differently, over a screen share, and only the host needs to own it.

What is the cheapest game for five people?+

Among Us and Fall Guys are free, and both handle five easily. Among the paid picks, Human: Fall Flat and Terraria are usually the cheapest per hour, and The Jackbox Party Pack only needs one person in the group to buy anything.
