Buy it only if the two friends you play with are on the same kind of machine as you. There is no crossplay, and the party caps at three
The verdict first: Nightreign is the best thing on this page for exactly three people who all own the same console, and the wrong purchase for almost everybody else. Bandai Namco describes it in its own words as “an ever-changing 3-player co-op experience”, and PlayStation's listing is blunter still: Supports up to 3 online players with PS Plus, with 1 player offline. Three is the ceiling. If your group is four, this game cannot seat you, and no patch has changed that.
The second constraint is the one people actually search for. Nightreign has no cross-platform play - its Steam feature list carries Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op, and does not carry the Cross-Platform Multiplayer flag that Steam puts on games which have it. So the PS5 player matches with PS5 and PS4 players, the Xbox player with Xbox players, and the PC player with PC players. If the three of you are split across different consoles, this is not the game - Helldivers 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds both do cross-platform co-op and both take four.
Is Elden Ring Nightreign crossplay? No - and here is the exact shape of it
No. The absence is deliberate rather than an oversight: director Junya Ishizaki said before launch that Nightreign would follow the original Elden Ring with cross-generationalplay but not cross-platform play, which means a PS4 player and a PS5 player can run together, and an Xbox One player and a Series X player can run together, but a PS5 player and an Xbox player cannot. That quote circulated through gaming press in May 2025 rather than a support document, so treat it as the developer's stated intent; what we can verify directly is the Steam feature list above, checked October 20, 2026, which does not list crossplay.
This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong about this purchase, because three copies bought by three friends on three different machines buys three single-player games. Our list of big games without crossplay exists for exactly this failure, and the crossplay hub runs the same check across every category on this site. Nightreign is also one of the titles the PS5-and-PC page has to warn readers about, because it looks like it should work and does not.
What a Nightreign run actually is - and why that suits some groups and not others
An expedition is a short, bounded session, not a campaign. Bandai Namco's page describes three Nightfarers dropping into the land of Limveld with two full days to explore before a final confrontation - a three-day hunt that resets when it ends. That structure is the reason to buy it: a Nightreign night has a start and a finish, so a group that can only get together for ninety minutes is not abandoning a save file halfway through a story. It is run-based, so nobody has to remember what happened last time, and nobody is locked out for missing a session. If that is the problem you have, our short-sessions guide and drop-in drop-out co-op both cover the same constraint across other genres.
It is also, unmistakably, a FromSoftware game. Nobody in your group gets carried through this because they are having a nice time on the sofa. Steam lists it as Gamepad Recommended with Playable without Timed Input, and PS lists online play as optional - you can run solo - but the difficulty is the product. A group with one person who bounces off hard games will have a bad evening, and our list for people who do not play games exists because that is a real and common group shape.
The duos question: two players works now, and it did not at launch
If there are two of you, you can play - but only because of a patch, and the official pages still describe the game as a three-player one. Nightreign launched with solo and three-player expeditions only; a two-player mode called Duo Expeditions arrived in title update 1.02 (shipped on consoles as build 1.10) on July 30, 2025, with the patch notes renaming the “Expedition Type” setting to “Number of Players” and stating that balance adjusts to the current count. That is press-reported from FromSoftware's own patch notes rather than something the store listings say, which is why PlayStation's page still reads “up to 3 online players”.
For a pair, that makes Nightreign viable rather than ideal - it was designed around three roles covering each other. Two people who want a co-op game built for two from the ground up are better served by the two-player list, and It Takes Two remains the recommendation there.
What you are buying, and what else exists for it
Nightreign is standalone - you do not need to own Elden Ring - and it runs on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, with a release date of May 30, 2025 on PlayStation's listing and May 29, 2025 on Steam. Bandai Namco's news page carries a DLC release headlined ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN: THE FORSAKEN HOLLOWS, dated December 4, 2025, so there is paid add-on content; the base game is the thing we are recommending here and the editions that bundle DLC are a separate decision we have not priced.
On top of the purchase, online play costs the usual platform fee: PS Plus is required for online playon PlayStation per Sony's own listing, Xbox charges for its equivalent tier, and PC does not charge at all. The full cost breakdown works that sum through for a group, and it is the reason a PC-hosted trio is the cheapest way to run this game.
