Popular Games That Are NOT Cross Platform

Check this list before anyone spends money.

By Stephen V., Founder & Editor · Last updated August 18, 2026 · How we pick

The games groups most often assume are crossplay

Read the crossplay column. Every one of these is a good game - they are here because mixed-platform groups keep buying them by mistake, not because they are bad.

The refund request nobody wants to write

Four friends decide on a game. Everyone buys it on their own platform. Someone opens the friends list and discovers there is nothing to click, because the game has no cross-platform play and never did. It is the single most common expensive mistake in group gaming, and it happens because crossplay has become common enough that people assume it is standard. It is not.

This page is the list to check first. Every game on it is genuinely good and worth owning - several are among our top picks elsewhere on this site. They are here because they are the ones mixed groups keep getting caught by, and because for each of them there is a crossplay alternative that does the same job.

Why a game has no crossplay

It is almost never technical. Three things usually explain it.

Age.Crossplay only became normal recently. A game built before the platform holders made it straightforward - Portal 2 is from 2011 - simply predates the plumbing, and retrofitting it into a finished game is rarely worth a publisher's time.

Platform exclusivity. If a game only exists on one machine, there is no crossplay question to answer. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are not missing a feature; there is no other version to connect to. This is the category people misread most often, because "no crossplay" and "not on your console" feel like the same problem when you are the one being left out.

Separate infrastructure. Some multi-platform games keep each platform's players in their own pool because the versions were built or are patched independently. Deep Rock Galactic is the instructive example: PC and Xbox players share a pool, PlayStation players are in another. It is neither fully crossplay nor fully absent, and a group that reads "crossplay: yes" on a summary site and stops reading gets it wrong.

What to check, in ten seconds

Open the developer's own page - not a wiki, not a forum thread - and look for the words cross-platform play applied to the mode you actually want. Co-op and versus are frequently different answers within the same game, and so are the current and previous console generations. Every game on this site links its official listing for exactly this reason; our methodology page explains what we verify and what we deliberately do not claim.

One to skip

There is no such thing as cross-buy between a console and PC. Buying a game on PS5 does not give you the PC version, buying it on Steam does not give you the Xbox version, and no storefront has ever offered that across those boundaries. Cross-save and cross-progression exist and are worth looking for - Diablo IV and Genshin Impact both have them - but they carry your progressbetween platforms you already own the game on. They are not a second copy. If your group is trying to avoid buying two copies, the honest routes are a Friend's Pass, Steam Remote Play Together, or a phone-based party game, all of which are covered on our one copy, two players guide.

Best for: A calm group on the same system that wants to build a farm together.

1-4 players co-op (same platform) · Farming / life sim

Four-player co-op farming that is the antidote to competitive stress - everyone shares one farm. The catch: multiplayer is same-platform only, so everyone needs to be on Switch, or everyone on PC. Not a crossplay pick.

The gold standard for two-player co-op: every mechanic is designed for two, and the Friend's Pass lets a second player join free. Split-screen the whole way through. Skip it if you're a group of three or more - it is strictly two.

The ones that surprise people most

Stardew Valley is the number one shock on this list. It is on every platform, it has four-player co-op, and the multiplayer is same-platform only - so a group with two people on Switch and two on PC cannot share a farm. If a calm co-op farm is what you want across platforms, Minecraft or Terraria are the substitutes. Our review covers the catch in full.

It Takes Twois the best co-op game ever made and it does not crossplay. The Friend's Pass means only one of you buys it, which people reasonably assume implies cross-platform play - it does not. Both players need to be on the same platform family. Its successor, Split Fiction, is the same design with crossplay, and that is the one to buy for a mixed pair. The comparison is built around exactly this decision.

Borderlands 3 catches out loot-game groups. Four-player co-op, split-screen on console, huge value - and no crossplay at all. Diablo IV is the crossplay alternative in that genre, at a higher price and with seasons attached; the head-to-head covers which is right for your group.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are the exclusivity cases. Nothing is missing from them - they are simply Switch games, and a friend on an Xbox has nothing to install. For a mixed group that wants racing or fighting energy, Rocket League is free with full crossplay and is the closest thing to a universal substitute.

Grand Theft Auto V Online keeps players within the same platform and generation, which also catches out groups where one person is on older hardware. Elden Ring Nightreign matchmakes per platform, so a trio has to line up first - and it is a three-player game, which our three-player page covers. Portal 2 and A Way Out are both same-platform co-op, both excellent, and both worth buying if you have already matched platforms.

Deep Rock Galactic is the partial case worth understanding, because it is the shape a lot of games take: PC and Xbox players share a crossplay pool while PlayStation is separate. If your group is PC and Xbox, it is one of the best co-op purchases on this site. If one person is on PS5, it silently is not. Our review spells out the pools.

The rule that prevents all of this

Ask what everyone is playing on before the group picks a game, not after. Most bad multiplayer evenings are not a bad game - they are a good game that one person could never have joined, chosen by four people who never checked.

If you already know the platforms, our crossplay combination pages are the fastest filter: PS5 and PC, Xbox and PS5, PC and Xbox, Switch and PC, Switch and PS5, Switch and Xbox, and phone and console. Everything on those pages has been checked against the developer's own listing.

And if a party will not connect in a game that does support crossplay, the cause is usually a setting rather than the game - our crossplay setup guide walks through the toggles on each platform.

Frequently asked questions

Which popular games do not have crossplay?+

Stardew Valley, It Takes Two, Borderlands 3, Grand Theft Auto V Online, Elden Ring Nightreign, Portal 2, and A Way Out are all same-platform only. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are Switch exclusives, so there is no other version to connect to at all.

Does Stardew Valley have crossplay?+

No. Stardew Valley's four-player co-op is same-platform only, so everyone has to be on Switch, or everyone on PC, and so on. For a mixed-platform group that wants shared building or farming, Minecraft and Terraria are the substitutes.

Does It Takes Two have crossplay?+

No. The Friend's Pass means only one of you buys it, which people often read as crossplay, but both players must be on the same platform family. Split Fiction, from the same studio, has the same two-player design plus crossplay.

Is there cross-buy between PS5 and PC?+

No. Buying a game on one platform has never granted the version on another across that boundary. Cross-save and cross-progression are different features - they carry your progress between platforms where you already own the game, not the game itself.

Is Deep Rock Galactic crossplay?+

Partly. PC and Xbox players share a crossplay pool, while PlayStation is a separate pool. So it is an excellent pick for a PC-and-Xbox group and quietly the wrong one if somebody in your group is on a PS5.

How do I check whether a game has crossplay before buying?+

Open the developer's own page rather than a wiki, and look for cross-platform play applied to the specific mode you want. Co-op and versus are often different answers within the same game, as are the current and previous console generations.
