The sweet spot: a full game, or a piece of gear they will use every day.

This is the tier where most gaming gifts should land, because it is the first point at which you can buy either of the two things that reliably make a gamer happy: a complete, current game they would have chosen themselves, or the accessory they keep not buying. Everything under $25 is a good game that happens to be cheap; here you stop compromising.

The list is split in two on purpose. The games half is for the person whose setup is already complete and just wants something new to play with the people they play with. The gear half is for the person who already owns every game they want - and there are more of those than gifters expect - where a headset that makes them audible on a call, or a second controller that turns their split-screen library into a two-player library, is a more useful present than any single game.

The pick, if you only buy one thing

It Takes Two.A two-player co-op story built from the ground up for two people, and the game we recommend more than any other on this site. What makes it the best gift in this bracket is the Friend's Pass: one copy lets a second player join for free, so a single purchase is genuinely a gift for two - buy it for them, and you (or their partner, or their sibling) can play the whole thing with them on the same system. It is on PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch; the edition we link is Xbox, so match theirs.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the alternative for anyone with a Switch, and the safest gift in gaming: four players on one console, no learning curve, in rotation for years. The only risk is that a regular Switch owner already has it - it is one of the best-selling games ever - so if they play a lot, choose something else here.

Before you buy

Match the platform, then check what they own. Each card lists every system a game is on; the button links one edition. For gear, the card says which machines it works with - the Logitech headset plugs into anything with a headphone jack, the 8BitDo pad pairs to a Switch, a PC or a phone, and the monitor arm only makes sense for someone who plays at a desk with two screens. If in doubt, the headset is the gear pick least likely to be wrong.

It Takes Two cover art

It Takes Two

PS5XboxPCSwitchCrossplay: No - same platform only

Best for: Two people who want one story built entirely around working together.

2 players, online or split-screen · Co-op action-adventure

The gold standard for two-player co-op: every mechanic is designed for two, and the Friend's Pass lets a second player join free. Split-screen the whole way through. Skip it if you're a group of three or more - it is strictly two.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

SwitchCrossplay: No - Switch only

Best for: A Switch group that wants instant, everyone-can-play racing.

1-4 local, up to 12 online · Kart racing

The easiest 'everyone grabs a controller' game on Switch - four-player split-screen locally and up to twelve online. Zero learning curve. Switch-only, so it does nothing for a mixed-console group.

SwitchPS5XboxPCMobileCrossplay: No - multiplayer is same-platform only

Best for: A calm group on the same system that wants to build a farm together.

1-4 players co-op (same platform) · Farming / life sim

Four-player co-op farming that is the antidote to competitive stress - everyone shares one farm. The catch: multiplayer is same-platform only, so everyone needs to be on Switch, or everyone on PC. Not a crossplay pick.

PS5PCXboxCrossplay: Yes - PS5 + PC + Xbox crossplay

Best for: A squad split across PS5, PC, and Xbox that wants chaotic 4-player co-op.

1-4 players online co-op · Co-op shooter

Four-player co-op with crossplay between PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S, so the classic 'I'm on PlayStation, they're on Xbox' problem just goes away. Friendly fire is always on, which is a feature. There is still no Switch version, so a Switch friend gets left out.

The Jackbox Party Pack 6

SwitchPS5XboxPCCrossplay: N/A - one host owns it, everyone joins from a phone

Best for: A room or a video call where nobody else owns a console or a controller.

1-10 players, plus an audience of up to 10,000 · Party / social

Only the host buys it; everyone else joins at jackbox.tv on their phone with a room code, which makes it the lowest-friction group game there is - and it works over a screen share. Pack 6 holds five games including Trivia Murder Party 2 and Push the Button. Amazon stocks the back catalog rather than the newest pack, so buy the latest packs direct from a console or PC store if you want the current one.

Borderlands 4 cover art

Borderlands 4

PS5XboxPCCrossplay: Yes - online crossplay via a free SHiFT account

Best for: Two on one couch who also want to bring two more friends in online.

2 split-screen on console, 4 online · Co-op looter-shooter

The Borderlands 4 FAQ is specific: "2-player splitscreen couch co-op on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S" and "up to 4-player co-op online across all platforms". 2K's own splitscreen post goes further - two split-screen duos can link up into a full party of four, which is the rarest trick in local co-op. The cons are a platform one and an account one: no split-screen on PC at all, crossplay needs a linked SHiFT account, and console online play still needs a paid subscription.

Best for: Five or six people in one room who want a short, loud, nostalgic brawl.

Up to 6 players, local + online · Beat 'em up

One of the very few games that seats six players at once - the official line is 'up to 6 players simultaneously', locally or online. Nobody needs to be good at games to enjoy it. A full run is short, and no crossplay is listed, so everyone online needs the same platform.

The gear, in depth

1
Logitech G432 product photo

Logitech G432

HeadsetLogitechBudget

Best for: A first headset that makes you audible on Discord without spending real money.

Wired gaming headset

For playing with friends the microphone matters more than the drivers, and the cheapest way to stop being the person nobody can hear is a wired headset from a company that makes a lot of them. Wired also means no battery to die in the middle of a session and nothing to pair.

The catch: Budget headset build quality is what it is - the plastic and the padding are the first things to go, and this is a cable you will eventually snag on a chair arm. Nobody should expect a wired budget set to survive being sat on.

8BitDo Pro 2 product photo

8BitDo Pro 2

Controller8BitDoBudget

Best for: The cheapest second pad that works on genuinely everything, including the Switch.

Bluetooth, Hall effect sticks, for Switch, Switch 2, PC Windows, Android, macOS, Steam and Raspberry Pi

A second controller only has to do one job - exist when a friend sits down - and this does it on more machines than any first-party pad. Hall effect sticks are the specification that matters over a long life: they use magnets rather than a wiper contact, which is the part that wears out and causes drift on ordinary controllers.

The catch: The layout is a Super Nintendo-style pad with grips, not an Xbox clone, so the face-button and stick positions feel different to anyone used to a modern console controller. Some Xbox-native PC games also expect Xbox button prompts and will show the wrong glyphs.

Amazon Basics Gas Spring Dual Monitor Arm product photo

Amazon Basics Gas Spring Dual Monitor Arm

Monitor armAmazon BasicsBudget

Best for: Two ordinary 24 inch panels, at the lowest price a gas-spring arm sells for.

Gas spring, fits 15-27 inch, supports 4.4-15.4 lbs per arm, VESA 75x75 and 100x100, desk clamp

A gas-spring arm holds position when you move it instead of needing to be re-tightened, and this is about the cheapest place that feature exists. For two 24 inch 1080p panels - which is what most dual setups actually are - the 15.4 lb per-arm rating and the 15-27 inch size range are comfortably enough.

The catch: The 15.4 lb per-arm limit and the 27 inch ceiling rule out most 32 inch and curved panels. Check your monitor's net weight without its stock stand, not the shipping weight on the box, before you order.

The games, by who you are buying for

A calm person, or a couple who like slow games.Stardew Valley. A farm you build over hundreds of hours, alone or with up to three others on the same system. No fail state, no pressure, and it never leaves people's rotation. The edition we link is Switch, and it is on every other system too.

A friend with a regular online squad on PS5, Xbox or PC. Helldivers 2. Four-player co-op with full crossplay between all three, so it works whatever mix of systems their group is on. Loud, chaotic, and the game a lot of groups adopted for months. The link is the PS5 edition.

A host - the person whose house everyone ends up at. The Jackbox Party Pack 6. Only the host needs to own it; everyone else joins from their phone, up to ten players, so it is the one game here that works for a room where nobody else has a controller. It is also the right pick for a remote game night over a video call.

Someone who plays with one other person on the couch. Borderlands 4. Two-player split-screen on PS5 and Xbox, and the same two can bring two more friends in online. A big, loud, current shooter that has already settled into this bracket. Rated for adults, so not for a household with kids.

A group that grew up in the nineties.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Up to six players in the same room, a short campaign, and the exact feel of the arcade game people remember. A wonderful gift for a group of adults who want one loud evening rather than a long commitment.

A mixed-age household with a Switch.Nintendo Switch Sports. Get off the couch and swing a Joy-Con - the game a grandparent and a six-year-old can play against each other. This one appeared in Nintendo's own holiday sale last year, which is worth knowing if the occasion is in December.

The gear, and who each piece is for

Logitech G432 - for the friend nobody can hear. If they play online with people, the microphone matters more than anything else they own, and a wired headset from a company that makes a lot of them is the cheapest fix. It plugs into a PC, a console controller or a phone. The honest catch: budget headsets are built like budget headsets, and the cable is the first thing to go.

8BitDo Pro 2 - for the Switch or PC owner whose friends never have a pad. A second controller is the whole shopping list for two-player local games, and this one works on a Switch, Switch 2, PC, phone and more. Its sticks use magnets rather than contacts, which is the part that wears out on ordinary pads. The layout is a classic Nintendo-style shape, which some people prefer and some do not.

Amazon Basics gas spring dual arm - for the desk gamer with two monitors on stands. The nerdiest gift on this page and, for the right person, the one they will thank you for most: it lifts two screens off the desk and lets them sit exactly where they should. Only buy it if you have seen their desk and it has two screens on it - and check the per-arm weight rating against their monitors first. Our dual monitor arm guide explains the three numbers that decide whether it fits.

Shopping in November?

Controllers and headsets are the two categories that discounted most reliably last Black Friday, and games more than a year old were widely cut in half. If you are buying from this list for a December occasion, read the Black Friday and Cyber Monday pagefirst - it has last year's actual prices by category and buy-now-or-wait guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gaming gift under $50?+

It Takes Two. It is the best two-player co-op game on the site, it is on every current system, and its Friend's Pass means one copy covers both players - so a single purchase is a gift the two of them play together. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the safest alternative for anyone with a Switch.

Is a headset or a game the better gift at this price?+

For someone who plays online with a group and doesn't own a decent headset, the headset - being heard clearly is the thing that improves every session. For someone whose setup is complete, a game they haven't got. If you're not sure, a headset is harder to get wrong than a game.

Which of these work on any console?+

It Takes Two, Stardew Valley, Overcooked and Shredder's Revenge are on PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch. The Logitech G432 plugs into anything with a 3.5mm jack. The 8BitDo Pro 2 covers Switch, Switch 2, PC and phones but is not listed for PS5 or Xbox.

Will these be cheaper on Black Friday?+

Historically, controllers, headsets and games more than a year old have discounted heavily in late November, while the newest Nintendo titles mostly haven't. Our Black Friday page has last year's actual prices by category and is where live deals are posted when they start.

Are these prices current?+

They're pulled live from Amazon and dated under every button. The under-$50 framing describes where each pick sat on that date; if a price has moved, the button shows today's number and that is the one to trust.
