Start with Fortnite - it is the only one on every platform your group owns
If your friends are scattered across a PS5, an Xbox, a PC, a Switch and a couple of phones, Fortnite is the pick. It is free, it has full crossplay across everything, and it is the only game on this list that runs on all five of those platforms including mobile. For a group that cannot agree on hardware and does not want to spend money, that combination is unbeaten.
If your group is all on consoles and PC but not phones, and you want something that takes ten seconds to explain, Rocket League is the better night out. If you have more than five people, Among Us is the only pick here that scales past a squad.
Why "free" and "crossplay" need to be checked together
These are the two filters that actually decide whether a group plays tonight, and most lists only apply one of them. A free game that is not crossplay leaves out whoever owns the wrong box. A crossplay game that costs money leaves out whoever is not spending this month. Both failure modes end the same way - the group plays nothing.
Applying both filters at once cuts the field down hard, which is why this page is short. There are a great many free multiplayer games and a great many crossplay games. The overlap, for a group that wants to play together without anyone buying anything, is essentially the seven titles below.
What to look for before you download
Check the group size against the mode, not the game. This is the single most common disappointment. "Free crossplay" does not mean "fits your group". Apex Legends is built around three-player squads. Fortnite and Fall Guys are built around four. Overwatch 2 is five against five. If there are six of you, most of this list quietly splits your group in half - and only Among Us, which takes up to fifteen, keeps everyone in the same game.
Expect to make an account, and expect it to be the slow part.Free crossplay games are free because they sell items, and selling items needs an account that follows you across platforms. That is also the thing that makes crossplay work: the account is what friends you, not the console. Budget ten minutes the first night for the person who has never installed it, and get everyone's username before you start rather than during.
On console, check whether online play needs a subscription. This is the exception that catches people out on a page like this. The game being free does not always mean playing it online is free on a console, because the platform's own online service can sit in front of it. The games here are generally the ones treated as exempt, but it is worth confirming on the day for the console in question - it is the one cost that can appear after you have downloaded everything. Our free versus paid multiplayer guide goes through what the subscriptions do and do not cover.
Crossplay is usually on by default, but not always. If a friend on another platform does not appear in your friends list, the first thing to check is the crossplay toggle in the game's own settings, which some titles let you switch off per account. The second is whether you are both on the same version - our crossplay hub breaks this down platform pair by platform pair.
Free does not mean no money is involved. Every game here funds itself through cosmetics or a battle pass. None of them require it to play with friends, and none of them are pay-to-win in a way that will decide a match between you and your group. But if you are setting this up for a household with children, the storefront is the part worth configuring first - our kids online safety guide covers the settings that matter.
