The console everyone already owns

A phone is the only device your entire group definitely has. No controllers to buy, no copies to line up, nothing to install on a television. That makes free mobile multiplayer the fastest possible answer to "what can we all play tonight", especially when your friends are in different houses and half of them do not consider themselves gamers.

The picks below are ordered by how quickly a group can actually be playing together, not by how impressive the games are. Four of them are free. The last two cost a few dollars and are included because they are the two paid phone games most worth the money for a group - and we say so rather than pretending the free list is longer than it is.

Start with Among Us

Among Us is still the best group game on a phone: free on mobile, full crossplay, and it scales from four players to fifteen. Nobody needs to be good at it, a round takes ten minutes, and it is designed around exactly the thing your group is probably already doing - talking. It works brilliantly alongside a voice call, which is why it heads our games to play on a video call list too.

Then the crossplay party games

Fortnite and Fall Guys both put phone players in the same lobbies as console and PC players, which matters when your group is not all on the same kind of device. Two honest notes on availability, because this changes over time and people get caught out:

Fortnite installs from the App Store on iPhone and iPad and from Google Play or Epic's own store on Android, and Epic also offers a cloud option where a direct install is not possible. Fall Guys on mobile is narrower - Epic's announcement puts it on the Epic Games Store on Android worldwide, with iOS availability limited to the European Union. If you are in the US, treat Fall Guys as an Android-and-console pick rather than an iPhone one, and check the official store listing before telling five friends to download it.

And the one that is a whole RPG

Genshin Impact is free, runs on phones, and has drop-in co-op for up to four with cross-save between phone, PC, and PlayStation - so somebody can play on the bus and continue on a console later. It is a much bigger download and a much bigger time commitment than anything else here. Ignore the gacha systems and it is a perfectly good free co-op RPG; our co-op RPG page puts it in context against the paid options.

Two paid picks worth a few dollars

Human: Fall Flat and Minecraft are not free on mobile, but both cost less than a sandwich and both crossplay with everything else your friends own. If your group is willing to spend anything at all, these two convert a phone from a party-game device into a proper multiplayer one. The live prices in the table above are for the Amazon listings, which are usually the console versions - on a phone you are buying through the App Store or Google Play instead.

One to skip

Skip Fall Guys if your group is on iPhones in the US. It is a great free party game and its mobile release is Android-first: Epic lists it on the Epic Games Store on Android worldwide and on iOS only in the European Union. Telling five friends to install something half of them cannot get is the fastest way to kill a game night. Among Us is the safe universal answer, and Fall Guys is still excellent on console and PC - see the free games hub.

What "free" means on a phone

Every free pick here is free to install and free to play to completion - the monetization is cosmetic. Fortnite and Fall Guys sell outfits. Genshin Impact sells character pulls. Among Us sells skins and hats and offers an ad-free option. None of them lock the multiplayer behind a payment, and none of them require a subscription.

What they do cost is storage and battery. Fortnite and Genshin Impact are large installs that will meaningfully warm up an older phone; Among Us is tiny. If someone in the group has a five-year-old handset, start with Among Us and work up. Our no-download page covers the options when even installing something is too much friction.

Phone plus voice call is the real setup

The best mobile group games assume you are talking to each other somewhere else - a Discord call, a group FaceTime, a speakerphone in the middle of a table. Among Us especially is a discussion game with a small game attached, and it collapses into silence if nobody has voice.

The practical arrangement is one phone playing and, if you can manage it, the call on something else - a laptop, a second device, headphones. Trying to run a group call and a game on the same handset works but is the single most common reason someone drops out mid-round. Our Discord guide covers voice setup properly, and phone games for friends far away is the long-distance version of this page.

Crossplay is the whole point

Do not think of these as phone games. Think of them as games that include phones. Among Us, Fortnite, Fall Guys, Genshin Impact, Minecraft, and Human: Fall Flat all let a phone player and a console player be in the same session, which solves the most common group problem there is: one person does not own a console and everyone else does.

That also means nobody has to be on a phone if they do not want to be. The person with a PS5 plays on the PS5, the person on the bus plays on their phone, and they are in the same lobby. See the crossplay hub for the full picture, and the crossplay setup guide for adding each other across accounts.

Group size on a phone

Four to fifteen: Among Us is the only pick here that genuinely handles a big group, and it is superb at it. Four: Fortnite squads, Fall Guys squads, Genshin co-op. Two to eight: Human: Fall Flat. Minecraft is limited by whatever world or realm you are playing on rather than by a fixed number.

If you have more than five people and everyone is on a phone, the honest answer is Among Us first and a party pack second - our large groups page covers what to do when the number keeps climbing.

Battery, data, and the things that end a session early

Two hours of Genshin Impact or Fortnite will drain a phone. Among Us and Human: Fall Flat are far lighter. If you are out of the house, mobile data use on the smaller games is modest but the initial download is not, so install before you leave. And put every phone on Do Not Disturb - an incoming call drops a player out of a lobby mid-round, which is the most avoidable interruption in group gaming.

The one-line answers

Six friends, all different phones, tonight: Among Us. A squad of four including console players: Fortnite. Android group that wants something sillier: Fall Guys. Something to play for months: Genshin Impact. Willing to spend a few dollars: Minecraft, then Human: Fall Flat.
