Minecraft vs Roblox

One purchase against a free storefront. They are not the same product.

By Stephen V., Founder & Editor · Last updated October 11, 2026 · How we pick

What we would actually buy

Roblox is free and has no listing to price, so it is discussed in the text rather than ranked here. These are the paid and free titles we would put a group of friends or a family on instead.

Buy Minecraft. Roblox is not a game you buy, which is the whole comparison

If you are choosing one thing for a child, a family or a group of friends to play together, buy Minecraft. It is one purchase, there is nothing to spend afterwards, it crossplays across every platform the Bedrock version runs on, and up to four people can share one screen on a console. You know on the day you buy it exactly what it will cost you and exactly what is in it.

Roblox is the better answer for exactly one kind of player: somebody who wants constant novelty and whose friends are already on it. It is not a game. Roblox describes itself as free to use, with a virtual currency called Robux that buys features inside individual experiences and items such as avatar clothing - and the experiences themselves are built by other users in Roblox Studio, the company's free design tool. That means the quality, the tone and the spending pressure vary enormously from one Roblox experience to the next, because they are made by different people. Checked October 11, 2026.

The comparison that actually decides it: what does it cost after you say yes?

Minecraft: nothing. One purchase per platform, no currency, no in-game shop you need to engage with. A Realms subscription exists if you want a server that stays up when you are offline, and it is optional. Our Minecraft write-up covers what the purchase gets you on each platform.

Roblox: open-ended, and that is the honest answer. The platform is free to enter and the costs sit inside the experiences. This is not a hidden trap - Roblox publishes controls for it - but it is a different kind of decision from buying a game. Parents can create an account with parent privileges, link it to the child's account, and set a monthly spending limit covering how much money the child can spend on Roblox including Robux, plus daily screen-time limits. Under-16 accounts need a linked parent account to send or receive Robux at all, approval is required each time, and transfers are capped at up to 500 Robux a day and 1,000 a month.

If you are the sort of person who would rather pay once and stop thinking about it, that paragraph is your answer, and it is Minecraft.

Age handling, side by side

Roblox has moved a long way on this and it deserves credit for it. In 2026 the company introduced age-based account types: users aged five to eight are placed on a Roblox Kids account, move to Roblox Select at nine, and reach a standard account at sixteen, with chat restricted for younger tiers. Roblox also states that conversations are monitored for child endangerment for users aged 13 and over, and its own guidance stresses that moving communications off the platform to other websites or apps violates its policies.

Minecraft's model is simpler rather than more sophisticated: on a private world or a console split-screen session, the only people your child plays with are the people in the room or the people they invited. There is no public lobby to be matched into. That simplicity is the reason we recommend it for younger children even though Roblox's controls are more elaborate - the smallest safe configuration of Minecraft is "one world, four known people", and that is very hard to get wrong. Our kids and online play guide goes through the settings for both situations.

Playing together: crossplay and player counts

Both are strong here and they get there differently. Roblox runs on practically anything with a screen and everyone meets in the same experience regardless of device. Minecraft's Bedrock version crossplays across console, phone and Windows, takes eight or more players online, and additionally supports up to four players on one screen on a console - which Roblox does not do. If your situation is "four people, one sofa, one television", that is not a close call. See Minecraft split-screen for how that works and phone and console crossplay for the mixed-device case.

One genuine Minecraft caveat: the Java Edition sold for PC is a separate program that does not crossplay with consoles or phones and has no split-screen. If anybody in the group is on a console or a phone, buy Bedrock.

One to skip

Skip the idea that you have to choose one of the two at all. Roblox costs nothing to install, so the sensible move for most families is to let a child use Roblox with the parent account linked and the monthly spending limit set, and to buy Minecraft as the thing the household actually owns and plays together. The real failure mode here is not picking the wrong one - it is buying Minecraft on PC in the wrong edition, or letting Robux spending run with no limit configured. Both are five-minute problems to prevent and expensive to discover later.

Pick by who is asking

A parent buying for one child aged 5 to 10. Minecraft on whatever console is in the house, played on a private world. One cost, no currency, and the four-player split-screen means you can join in without buying a second copy or a second console.

A parent whose child is already asking for Roblox by name. Their friends are on it, and a competing purchase will not change that. Link the parent account, set the monthly spending limit and the screen-time limit, and treat Minecraft as the separate thing you own rather than the replacement.

A group of adult friends choosing something to play together. Minecraft, comfortably - and then Terraria, which is the same long shared project with combat in it. Roblox's user-made experiences are a lottery for an adult group that wants one good evening; see the master list instead.

Somebody who wants free and social above all. Then the honest answer is not Minecraft at all. Among Us and Fortnite are both free, both crossplay everywhere including phones, and both give you the "everyone is here, nobody paid" evening that Roblox is really competing for. Our free crossplay list is the full version.

Where the numbers come from

Every Roblox claim above is from Roblox's own help centre and newsroom: the free-to-use model and Robux, the parent-account linking and spending and screen-time limits, the Robux transfer caps for under-16 accounts, and the 2026 age-based account tiers. Age rules and Robux limits vary by region and are subject to change, which is Roblox's own caveat and worth repeating. The Minecraft platform, crossplay and player-count facts come from its store listing and help centre. We hold no review score, test result or award for either, and have not invented any.

Frequently asked questions

Is Minecraft or Roblox better?+

They are different products. Minecraft is one purchase with a fixed, known set of features, crossplay across console, phone and Windows, and up to four players on one console screen. Roblox is a free platform of user-made experiences with a currency inside them. For a family or a group that wants one thing to own and play together, Minecraft. For a child whose friends are already on Roblox, Roblox will win regardless of what you buy.

Is Roblox free?+

Roblox says it is free to use. The costs sit inside individual experiences and in avatar items, paid for with Robux, its virtual currency. Parents can link a parent account to a child's account and set a monthly limit on how much money the child can spend on Roblox including Robux, plus daily screen-time limits.

Which is safer for kids, Minecraft or Roblox?+

Roblox has the more elaborate controls - 2026 age-based accounts with Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8, Roblox Select from 9 and standard accounts at 16, restricted chat for younger tiers, and parent-linked spending approval. Minecraft is safer by being simpler: on a private world or a console split-screen session your child only plays with people in the room or people they invited, with no public lobby to be matched into.

Can you play Minecraft and Roblox together with friends on different devices?+

Both support mixed devices, in different ways. Roblox players meet in the same experience regardless of device. Minecraft's Bedrock version crossplays across console, phone and Windows - but Java Edition on PC is a separate program that does not crossplay with consoles or phones. If anyone in the group is on a console or phone, buy Bedrock.

Does Roblox have split-screen?+

No. If your situation is several people in one room with one television, that is where Minecraft wins outright - its console version supports up to four players sharing one screen. Roblox expects a device per player.

How much does Minecraft cost compared with Roblox?+

Minecraft is a one-off purchase per platform with no in-game currency; the live price is on this page. Roblox costs nothing to install and has no fixed price, because spending happens inside experiences through Robux. That difference - a known cost versus an open-ended one - is the real decision, and it is why we recommend setting a Roblox monthly spending limit on day one.

Is Roblox or Minecraft better for a group of adult friends?+

Minecraft, then Terraria. Roblox's experiences are made by other users, so quality and tone vary from one to the next, which is a poor fit for a group that wants one reliable evening. If free matters most, Among Us and Fortnite are the better free picks for an adult group and both crossplay everywhere.

Do I need a subscription for either?+

No. Minecraft needs no subscription for local split-screen or for a private world, though Realms is an optional paid server. Roblox needs no subscription to play. On consoles, joining other people's worlds over the internet may require that console's own online service, which we cover on our split-screen and subscriptions guide.
