The gear, and who each piece is for
Xbox Wireless Controller - the PC or Xbox player who passes one pad around. Windows treats it as the reference gamepad, so nothing to configure and every game shows the right prompts. Runs on AA batteries out of the box; a rechargeable pack is the natural stocking stuffer to go with it.
HUANUO FlowLift dual monitor arm - the two-screen desk. The gift for the person whose second monitor sits on a stand at the wrong height. It gets both screens off the desk and puts them where they should be. Only buy it if you have seen two monitors on their desk, and check the per-arm weight rating against those monitors first - our monitor arm guide explains the three numbers that decide whether it fits.
BenQ GW2490 - the one-screen desk gamer who plays with Discord open. A second monitor is the most requested upgrade we see, and its real job is not spanning a game across two screens (almost nothing does that) but holding the voice chat, the guide and the party window that currently sit on top of the game. This is the default panel: IPS, both common inputs, built-in speakers that can carry chat audio.
8BitDo Pro 2 - the Switch owner, or the PC player who wants a pad that works on everything. Pairs to Switch, Switch 2, PC, phone and more; magnet-based sticks that do not drift. A Nintendo-style layout rather than an Xbox one, which is a matter of taste.
25 ft fiber optic HDMI cable - the person trying to get their PC on the TV. The most specific gift here and, for the right person, the one that solves a problem they have been living with. A long ordinary HDMI run falls apart at 4K; a fiber cable does not. It is directional - one end for the PC, one for the TV - and plugging it in backwards looks exactly like a dead cable, so include that note. Our couch gaming setup page explains the two routes from a PC to a living room.
If you insist on a game
Pick something recent enough that the odds are on your side, and something built for playing with people so it does not compete with whatever they are already playing alone. Halo: Campaign Evolved is the newest big split-screen campaign on Xbox and PS5 - but if they have Game Pass on Xbox or PC it is included, so ask first. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a four-player couch kart racer with crossplay for the household that is not on a Switch. Borderlands 4 is the loud two-player split-screen shooter that also brings two more friends in online, rated for adults. All three are new enough that a heavy player may still not own them; all three exist on more than one system, so match theirs.
The gift that cannot be wrong
If you cannot see their setup and cannot find out their system, a store gift card for their platform - PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or Steam - is the honest answer for this person. They will spend it in a sale on something they actually wanted, and the note you put with it, naming the game you would like to play together, is the part they keep.
