The picks, and how each one handles it
Portal 2 is the best game on this page and the cheapest. Its co-op campaign is a separate two-player game built from scratch for a pair, and the communication tools - pointing, countdowns, gestures - exist precisely so two people can solve a chamber together without speaking. It is over a decade old, usually costs a few dollars, and nothing has replaced it. Same-platform co-op, in practice a PC game today. Full review.
Rocket League is free, has full crossplay, and its quick chat wheel is all a team needs. Five-minute matches mean a silent session still feels complete rather than half-played. It is the easiest thing on this list to start tonight.
Deep Rock Galactic is the four-player co-op pick. Each of the four classes has an obvious job, the laser pointer covers most instructions, and the game is built around AI enemies rather than opposing players, so a missed call costs a little health rather than the match. PC and Xbox share a crossplay pool; PlayStation is separate. Review.
Minecraft and Terraria are the long-haul silent picks: build alongside each other, type when you need to, and let the world carry the conversation. Both are cheap and both crossplay widely. Stardew Valley is the calmest of the three, though its multiplayer is same-platform only.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the couch answer - nobody has ever needed a headset to race - and Fall Guys and Human: Fall Flat are the free and cheap party options where silence genuinely costs you nothing.
Middle grounds worth knowing about
Listen without speaking. Joining a call muted is a real option and it is under-used. The person who does not want to talk still hears everything, still knows what the group is doing, and can type when needed. For a friend who is anxious about voice rather than unable to use it, this is often the whole solution.
Push-to-talk. If the problem is a noisy house or a sleeping child rather than the talking itself, push-to-talk means the microphone is only ever live when you are holding a key. Our Discord guide covers setting it up.
Text chat in a call. Most voice apps have a text channel alongside the audio. A group where three people talk and one types works fine, as long as the talkers remember to read.
Where this overlaps with other constraints
No-voice sessions are often no-headset sessions, which are often late-night sessions on a phone. If that is the shape of your evening, our no-equipment guide and free mobile picks cover it. If the friend who cannot use voice is also the one who never plays games, start instead with games for friends who do not play games, which filters for a gentler learning curve.
And if the group is remote as well as silent, the long-distance hub has the wider list - just weight it towards the picks above rather than the social deduction ones it leads with.
